Farid - Fri 13 Oct 2006Cabo - Blacksburg, VATonight marked the second appearance of this Eighteenth Street Lounge owner and resident DJ in the southwest VA area. This was a party thrown in true Cabo style - good, loud and hoppin'. Spark Arrester and Binary Dialect opened and I daresay I had forgotten how good those guys are. Joey (Eclectic from Spark Arrester) in particular threw down a bunch of hip-hop/funk/breakbeat jams I had never heard before and proved himself yet again to be, well, Eclectic. As for Farid, well, the title of Best DJ in the World definitely still applies. While his set at Metro a few weeks ago was wide-ranging in musical styles, this time Farid opened his crate and pulled out record after record of good, old-fashioned House. Mostly it was of the deep variety with sexy, soulful vocals and swooning synths, including a remix of Theivery Corporation's "The Heart's a Lonely Hunter" featuring David Byrne. But, there were a few darker, edgier tracks that almost bordered on techno that surprised me. The crowd certainly didn't seem to care what genre he was playing though because they stayed a moving solid right up until last call. Afterwards I spoke briefly with Farid and I think he's beginning to like the Boogieburg/Roanoke area, which hopefully means he'll be back soon and often. |

All Good Funk Alliance - Sat 7 Oct 2006Metro! - Roanoke, VAThese guys know how to rock a breakbeat. Got started around 10 when the crowd was still trickling in and got everybody warmed up with some good ol' underground hip-hop. Proceeded to up the energy level from there and there was no looking back. The entire night was just one funkin' break/big beat gem after another. Cut up hip hop sampled over driving back beats, unreleased remixes of their own material (including one of "Codeword for a Change" that I simply must get my hands on) and even some old school funk thrown in for good measure. I think at one point I even heard a snippet of Ides of March - "Vehicle". Rusty and Frank (two very cool low-key cats - Frank is even an audio engineer - my kind of people!) kept it going straight up until close, at which point I think the entire dancefloor collapsed from exhaustion. Definitely a night to remember. |
